I had to skip last week’s newsletter because my kitchen sink was clogged and it was, uh, disgusting. To limit the number of dishes, I had to eat out a lot last week *enter sarcastic “drats” here*. I mainly ate frozen pizza and homemade sandwiches off the same plate, but I did get a chance to try a new restaurant here in Denver, The Greenwich. Staying true to its name, the vibes were very Manhattan and everything was seriously delish. Here’s what we ordered:
Bread + Butter: country loaf with herby compound butter
Pea Pizza: guanciale, pea tendrils, tallegio cheese
Hakurei Turnips: brown butter hazelnuts, grated horseradish
Roasted Carrots: lemon tahini, candied pistachio
Greenwich Cheesecake: brûléed with a graham cracker crust
Warm Strawberry Black-Sesame Cake: ricotta, tahini, tarragonAnd to drink I had:
The Bowery: tequila, honey-ginger, lime, nutmeg
Alphabet City: mezcal, lemon, chili, acid phosphate (I preferred this one.)
June Cookbook: Sweet Laurel: Recipes for Whole Food, Grain-Free Desserts and Sweet Laurel Savory: Everyday Decadence for Whole-Food, Grain-Free Meals by Laurel Gallucci and Claire Thomas
Sweet Laurel is a trendy, grain-free bakery in Los Angeles. I have never been but I was drawn into her first book by the pretty pink cover. (I’m such a sucker!) I don’t typically eat grain-free, but I certainly don’t mind it. I think of it as a bonus if something is delicious and vegan/grain-free/paleo/whatever.
I first tried the mocha chip muffins (pg. 47). I was hoping for a stronger coffee flavor, but I still liked these a lot. They are sweetened with maple syrup and I subbed the vegan chocolate chips with white chocolate. (No shade, I just had too many chips to justify buying another bag.) They’re not overly sweet so I liked having one or two of these in the morning with my latte.
*Note these are not vegan as the recipe calls for two eggs.
Hm. I did not love these cheddar crackers (pg. 83, savory) and yet, I kept going back several times to eat one. These were very dry and crumbly, but I suppose if you’re in need of a gluten-free alternative to cheddar crackers, these would suffice.
Thanks for reading, sweeties! 🍎
