If you like cookies (as if there are people who don’t like cookies) you need to pick up Sarah Kieffer’s 100 Cookies. It’s essentially a cookie gold mine, with some occasional brownies and bars thrown in. My favorite thing about this book so far is how unpretentious it is. Yes, you have some unique cookies like toasted sesame and raspberry rye, but you also have your chocolate chips, your peanut butters and your snickerdoodles for those days when you want to enjoy the simple pleasures.
After my pie failures last month, I’m looking forward to a month full of cookies, something I know I can make successfully. If you’re my friend in the Denver area, prepare yourself for a lot of cookies!
December Cookbook: 100 Cookies: The Baking Book for Every Kitchen by Sarah Kieffer
One of my all-time favorite cookies is a ginger molasses cookie (pg. 243). These came together easily enough, just like your average cookie dough, but it was the baking technique that made these unique. Sarah is known for her pan-banging cookies, a method where you tap the pan in the oven every few minutes to create ripples on the edge of the cookie. This method creates two textures in the cookie: a crisp outer edge and a soft, gooey center (aka a perfect cookie).
These are not in the book, but I just had to try the marbled shortbread cookies by Elana Berusch (aka @lanibakes) this week. She posted a gorgeous photo on Instagram months ago, teasing the recipe, and she finally posted it! These cookies seem complicated at first glance, but the step-by-step photos really helped. My mind was racing with so many color combination ideas! But obviously I had to give the first batch ~* Lisa Frank vibes. *~ I’m really impressed with myself over how well these turned out. Look how vibrant those colors are!!
Thanks for reading, sweeties! 🍎
Omg, I'm gonna LOVE this month! Be sure to save/freeze me some samples!!!
Also, love the Lisa Frank color scheme. Def want to taste those shortbread cookies! (Is the pic pre- or post- baking?
