This Tartine cookbook was one of the first cookbooks I ever bought myself. I had ambitions to ~one day~ attempt to make croissants. It took a few years but that day finally came! (Even though I used a different recipe entirely, I credit Tartine with inspiring me to try in the first place.)
This book is gorgeous and perfect for collectors who have no interest in spending three days learning how to laminate. For the most part, I tried all of the recipes I was ever going to try from this book. (The only one I wanted to make but didn’t have time for were the rocky road brownies (pg. 251). I will circle back to those!) I think I will still reach for Claire Saffitz’s Dessert Person whenever I have the itch for a baked good.
You should buy this book if…
You have the time for trial and error.
You are a collector of pretty cookbooks.
You know where to buy einkorn flour.
March Cookbook: Tartine: A Classic Revisited by Elisabeth M. Prueitt and Chad Robertson
Well, this tart certainly looks beautiful. But looks aren’t everything!! I had high hopes for this butterscotch tart (pg. 141) because a. I love butterscotch and b. I typically have good luck baking tarts. I’m not sure what went wrong here but I left the custard to set overnight and it never quite got there. I took a few bites (or, scooped a few bites) and the flavor was really great, but there was no way it would hold up if I took it out of the tart pan. The chocolate clusters on top were also a bust. I kept them in an airtight container but they still lost their crunch, leading to an unappetizing chewy mess. Anyway, at least it made a nice photo!
Yes, another tart! The rye tart dough (pg.) recipe used earlier in the week was a double batch, so I used the second half for the matcha streusel tart (pg. 137). This tart was one of my favorites of the month. I already love matcha desserts and the tart raspberries were such great contrast. I will be keeping this recipe in my back pocket.
Thanks for reading, sweeties! 🍎
Love the "You should buy this cookbook" blurb. I laughed out loud. :)
