I pulled off the ultimate day trip this Saturday: ten hours in Austin, just in time for dinner and a show! I hit the road that afternoon and made it just in time to meet up with a friend for an early dinner at Foreign & Domestic. We shared gruyere popovers, mushroom gnocchi, a crisp romaine salad with goat cheese and walnuts, and a perfectly seared steak with dijon cream and shishito peppers. Everything was great and the portions were spot-on—I love a restaurant that doesn’t make you feel like you have to overindulge to get your money’s worth. Then it was off to see John Early at Mohawk!
As much as I would have loved to stay longer after the show, my dog mom guilt kicked in hard. I didn’t want to leave Maisie overnight again after just getting back from New Orleans, so I hopped back in the car and headed home. I was back in my own bed by 1 am, by the grace of God (my Britney Spears playlist).
Golden Fried Rice with Salmon and Furikake by Lucas Sin
from Bon Appetit
This was a refreshing twist on my usual salmon and rice combo. Sure, it’s no match for takeout, but it’s a solid option for a weeknight dinner. The golden yellow color comes from seperating the eggs and tossing the cold rice in the yolks. It’s a technique straight out of Chinese imperial cuisine. The yolk covers each grain, ensuring every bite is perfectly separated and packed with flavor.
Chicken Cutlet with Lemon Poppy Creme Fraiche by Molly Baz
from her website, “The Club”
This dish is like a grown-up version of the classic chicken cutlet with a tangy, lemony sauce that’s creamy without being heavy. This sauce is one to keep in your back pocket whenever you want to give your go-to cutlets a little glow-up. And the amount of chives she suggests? #ChiveHive rise up!
Pumpkin Maple Cornbread by Samantha Seneviratne
from NYT Cooking
It's officially fall, y'all! Even though it was a toasty 91 degrees outside, I still turned my oven on to make this cornbread on Saturday, which was technically the first day of fall. (If I bake it, fall will come, right?) Samantha Seneviratne has a couple cookbooks that have been on my radar for awhile, but this recipe has me thinking I need to pick them up sooner rather than later!
On the Backburner
Here is what I have planned for next week. Feel free to cook along and let me know what you think!
