One of my most recent goals is to read more. I enjoy reading, but like most people, I also enjoy scrolling on the little black rectangle called My Phone. They don’t make it easy, folks! I don’t want to call it a ~nEw YeAr ReSoLuTiOn~ (said making this face) but, like, okay, it’s a goal...that I am trying to implement...to, like, better myself.
Removing social media apps from my phone has helped a lot. (I never said my ideas were novel and new...) I did this back in November after a certain event happened a certain way. It’s almost January now and look at me, still standing — only with a little less awareness of the latest meme trends. Despite it all, I still reach for my phone first thing in the morning. (You know it’s bad when I wake up and start checking my electricity usage for the week… It makes you wonder, is it really the content we care about or is it the simple act of looking at something on a screen?) But, I’ve been taking this opportunity of less scrolling to read more. It’s still staring at a screen, but it’s a Kindle so it doesn’t count!
This isn’t completely non-food related though, so let me bring it home real quick. Here are some food-related books on my to-read list this year, both fiction and non-fiction, if you’re interested.
Butter by Asako Yuzuki - about a female gourmet cook and serial killer, and the journalist intent on cracking her case, inspired by a true story.
Extra Virginity by Tom Mueller - about the scandalous world of olive oil.
A Certain Hunger by Chelsea Summers - about a successful food critic who has special taste in men.
Tastes Like Chicken by Emelyn Rude - about the history of America’s favorite bird.
Extra-Fluffy Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Icing by Zaynab Issa
from Bon Appetit
This week, my only recipe goal was to make these cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. A tragic yeast mishap meant my dough refused to rise in time for the big day. But I wasn’t ready to give up. Armed with fresh yeast and leftover holiday spirit, I gave it another go the day after Christmas — and I’m glad I did. These cinnamon rolls were worth it. Super-sized and extra-fluffy, they were everything you’d want in a cinnamon roll and more. It proves that good things really do come to those who (eventually) rise.
On the Backburner
Here is what I have planned for next week. Feel free to cook along and let me know what you think!
Thanks for reading, sweeties! 🍎
